Larkum Name

Suares Name (The Anglo Indian branch of the name)

The Larkum Name

The Larkum Name is a relatively rare name, only 88 births in the name of Larkum have been registered, at the Registry of Births, Marriages and Deaths for England and Wales, since records began in 1837 up until the latest published records of 2002. The population explosion does not seem to have affected the Larkums, as there seems to have been as many Larkums around in the 1700's and 1800's as there are today. I believe that all Larkums living in Britain today are descendants of James Larkum (1791 - 1876) and therefore also descendants John William Larkum and James Larkum (abt 1705 - 1770). James Larkum (abt 1705 - 1770) is the earliest Larkum I can positively identify as my ancestor. The earliest record of the Larkum name in the UK, I have found, is the Christening of William Larkum in Ufton Nervet (about 6 miles from Reading , Berkshire) in 1636.
I was brought up to believe that my version of the spelling of my name was probably a simplification or corruption of one of the other versions of spelling the Larkum name in the not to distant past. I now believe my version has every right to be considered one of the original spellings of the Larkum name.

American Larkums :
I have assembled an American Larkum Database from all the entries I have been able to find on the Internet. This database has it's own index (American Index) but can also be accessed via Index of Individuals and Surname list.
When I started the American section of my website it only showed individuals who's name was spelt the same way as mine "Larkum". As I became more familiar with the American ancestry it became clear that the great majority of Larcoms, however the name is spelt, living in America today are decendents of Mordecai Larcom. With this in mind I have extended the American section of my website to include all the spellings of the Larcom name. The spelling of the name has changed for different family branches and at variouse times to give about six different spellings of the name.
What was the original spelling of the name?
If one were to go on the records of the IGI then I think one would assume Larcom to be the original spelling of the name. But other sources tell a slightly diferrent story.
I believe that:
1. There was no one original spelling of the name as such.
2. The two most common early spellings were Larcom and Larkum.
3. Larcom and Larkum was used interchangeably for the same individual and in about equal amounts.

The earliest record of the name that I have found is that of William Larkum , who was killed in the Good Friday Massacre of 1622.
Whether this individual was an ancester of the American Larkums I do not know. He must certainly be related to the William Larkum who was the earliest recorded American Larkum ancester.

There are several Geographical Features in the USA which bear the Larkum name:
Larkum Canyon, North Larkum Canyon and Larkum Pond and Larkum Hill (elevation 1412ft.), which is one of the Summits of Berkshire County, MA.
The map at the bottom of the following page, Buckskin Mountain, shows Larkum Canyon
A map showing Larkum Pond and Larkum Hill can be seen by visiting Mountain Zone.com .

I would like to hear from any Larkums anywhere in the world and of any spelling.

The Suares Name

The Suares Name is the second most represented name in my data base with 88 Suares individuals named. Suares is my wife's mother's family name. The family are believed to be the descendants of a Portuguese Trader who settle in Madras in the 1800’s. The bare bones of the Suares family tree were given to me, in India, by my wife's uncle Russell Suares. This tree, although very extensive, was very anecdotal and contained no dates whatsoever. I spent many lunchtimes at The Oriental and India Office of The British Library searching the records to put detail onto this tree. Unfortunately the records are somewhat patchy especially before 1900. Any Suares individuals who are shown with no details are known only from the original family tree and there may well be inaccuracies. The earliest Suares in my data base is Anthony Suares. On the original Suares family tree the individual in this position was called Janiero Suares. But the marriage records of his sons show his name to have been Anthony Suares.
